How we’re building a world-class team

At Oath, we are missionaries, not mercenaries. Our team consists of builders who believe in making the world a safer place through tech.

People, not profits

If you’re looking to get rich, quick, do not join Oath. We are more than just app builders, we are humans passionate to change our world for the better. We are angry with the broken, exploitative systems and eager to provide better solutions.
We’ve seen what life is like with work that is meaningless and boring in big corporations. For us, technology is so much more than just a way to make money. Tech is a problem-solving tool that can be infinitely useful in shaping lives. Creating these tools is our passion, it sparks joy in us and is genuinely fun to make. We know that the scaleable nature of software means that we can help the lives of many with the work of a few.
Technology is not inherently good or bad. The outcome simply depends on who is in charge. For too long tech has been used to reinforce our existing world order of economic inequality and working class exploitation. This is unacceptable.
We fundamentally believe Oath as a tool for positive societal impact, helping people be more accountable, trusting, and communal while also improving socioeconomic mobility by offering goods and services at far cheaper prices. Our purpose is creating tech that prioritizes people over profits.

Learners and builders

We’re looking for builders, not bureaucrats. If you’re looking to prioritize other people’s work as your job, Oath isn’t right for you. All of our team is made of people with hard skills (like design, engineering, operations) who are individually contributing to the product experience. We’re looking for people who have out of their own volition, created something useful and beautiful that others have used through engineering, design, or hustle. Generally, these people will have experience going from “zero to one” creating something from nothing. These creators are focused on solving problems close to their own hearts and not done solely to “look good” on a resume. They are excited about Oath and our mission.
These people do not have to know everything. However, they must have shown clear dedication and passion towards their craft and an insatiable desire to learn. The Oath team will shape and mold these individuals to become expert product developers, fearless creators, and good humans. We believe that bringing together amazing people, giving them clear frameworks of work, and tackling the world’s most pertinent issues together is a recipe for success :)

Turn free time into paid experience

In this stage, Oath is fully self-funded by the founder who is the only full-time “employee”. The goal is to bootstrap until we reach product-market fit at which point we will raise money on better terms to scale a product we know works.
In the meantime, we will use our relationships and friends in a part-time capacity to reach product-market fit. This will serve as both paid experience as well as a prolonged interview to see if there is long-term fit. There are 3 types of individuals we’re looking for:
  1. University students
  1. Tech workers with ample free time
  1. Job seekers looking for part-time work
I believe each of these groups are under-utilized in relation to their capabilities by the current market. Of course, these individuals must be willing to work, learn, and create. The founder has extensive personal networks having created one of the most influential tech orgs at UT Austin (txproduct.org) and will use this as the talent pool. From there, we will hire friends of friends.

Flexibility now, commit later

One of the best parts of this working situation will be the flexibility mixed with clear direction. There is large, inherent risk with joining a startup and you can work at a company with high growth potential without betting it all. At the same time, many startups suffer from lack of direction and ambiguity. At Oath, there is a clear path forward that will challenge, teach, and better yourself.
The worst case scenario is you learned a lot, got a great resume talking point, and walked away with some money. The best case scenario is you learned a lot, convert to a full-time offer on a rocketship, and do your life’s work. Sounds pretty great to me.
