The idea behind Oath is very simple, but revolutionary in today’s world. Let’s take the latest cutting-edge technology and use it to prioritize the safety and well-being of every day people. Let’s adhere to strict family business values and refuse to sell user data or maximize profit. Let’s measure success by user value instead of shareholder value. And at the end of the day, we’ll have built not just a successful business, but a lasting legacy, and a movement.
Technology is neither good, nor evil. It is a tool. In the wrong hands it can be catastrophic. But with true intention, it can amplify the work of a few for the benefit of the many.
Why then does it seem like every bright-eyed teenager that moves to San Francisco to change the world ends up accelerating us further into technological dystopia? It’s not because they’re evil. It’s because from day one they’re beholden to a system that prioritizes profits over people. As soon as they take investment from the wrong people, they become legal slaves to the shareholders. The only way out is getting bought by a bigger company, going public on the stock market, or most likely bursting into flames. Any dreams of goodwill are stamped out by the need to infinitely grow and make a return.
We’re doing things differently. We’re funding the business with our own savings, friends, family, and value-aligned investors. We’re okay with slow, meaningful growth. That means we’ll be around for a long time because we’re patient and focused on financial sustainability.
For good reason, many people distrust technology companies. That makes sense. We do too. Oath may not be for everyone, and that’s okay. But for those that choose to put their trust in us to protect them, we will not let you down. We will work tirelessly to save you time, money, and headache. With care and collaboration, we will grow together.
